The Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) has published the APCO Action Plan for Problematic and Unnecessary Single-Use Plastic Packaging, designed to help Australia’s packaging supply chain phase out problematic and unnecessary single-use plastic packaging through innovative and sustainable solutions.

The action plan will help drive the necessary change at each step of the packaging supply chain to achieve the 2025 National Packaging Targets and reduce the 50,700 tonnes of single-use plastic packaging entering the market every year.

Benefits for Retailers

The National Retail Association (NRA) is proud to have been involved in the development of this resource through the APCO Design Working Group and is confident the practical framework will help retailers to eliminate, redesign, replace or innovate to introduce new solutions.

Retailers will also benefit from the range of industry best practice case studies and market programs contained in the report, including initiatives by Officeworks, Planet Protector Packaging, Woolworths, Coles, ALDI and McDonalds to name a few.

The NRA looks forward to continued work alongside APCO shifting Australia’s economy and communities away from single-use disposable plastic packaging to more durable reusable and recyclable packaging. During this transition, the NRA will champion commercially feasible solutions with the goal of reducing packaging consumption, minimising retailer costs, reducing packaging waste and improving the economics of recycling.
