As part of the Next Generation Banknote Program (NGB), the Reserve Bank of Australia this week released images of the new $5 banknote that will be issued into circulation from 1 September 2016. Mindful of the increasing threat posed by counterfeiters, the NGB project will culminate in new, more secure banknotes being introduced over the course of the coming years.
The new $5 banknote includes upgraded security features to ensure Australia’s banknotes remain secure into the future, as well as a tactile feature to assist the vision-impaired community distinguish between difference denominations. The colour palette, people and sizes will be retained as well as continuing to be printed on plastic.
Issuance of the new $5 banknote will commence on 1 September 2016 however it will take some time for the new banknotes to be widely circulated. The current series of banknotes can continue to be used even after the new banknotes are issued.
