Under the New South Wales Retail Trading Amendment (Anzac Day Trading Hours) Bill 2024,some businesses will be required to remain closed on Anzac Day. The trading hours restriction was announced on July 10, 2024, by the Premier of New South Wales, the Hon Chris Minns MP.
Currently, retail traders including fashion retailers and supermarkets are currently required to stay closed until 1pm. The change will now ensure they remain closed until midnight on Anzac Day.
According to the New South Wales Government, the restrictions do not apply to small businesses and businesses that are not considered retailers. Additionally, this extends to or with businesses with exemptions, including markets, cafes, newsagencies, chemists, petrol stations, fruit and vegetable shops, cafes, takeaway restaurants, and licenced venues such as pubs and clubs. These businesses can continue to remain open the entire day.
The New South Wales Minister for Industrial Relations, the Hon Sophie Costis, has advised that shops that demonstrate exceptional circumstances can continue to apply to the Secretary of the Department of Customer Service for an exemption so that they can operate on Anzac Day, if it is in the public interest to do so.
