Peak industry bodies the National Retail Association (NRA) and the Franchise Council of Australia (FCA) have welcomed the decision by the New South Wales Government to provide urgent tenancy relief to struggling businesses.
Late yesterday the state government answered the call of both the NRA and FCA and agreed to reintroduce the NSW commercial tenancy relief legislation used in 2020.
NRA CEO Dominque Lamb said this will at least provided much needed hope to retailers battling prolonged lockdowns.
“Many businesses in NSW are close to breaking point, this decision to reintroduce the leasing code will at least provide hope to those struggling,” Ms Lamb said.
“Retailers across lockdown-affected parts of NSW thank the state government for listening to their urgent pleas.”
FCA CEO Mary Aldred said it was a common-sense decision and that the NSW Government should be commended for taking on board industry feedback.
“Reinstating the leasing code was what our membership in NSW was telling the FCA needed to occur and we’re pleased to see the state government has acted on our advocacy,” Ms Aldred said.
“Make no mistake, it remains an enormously challenging period for franchise businesses across NSW, but this will help many who are struggling with their leasing obligations.”
Both the NRA and FCA had written directly to the NSW Government on the urgent need to reintroduce the NSW commercial tenancy relief legislation used in 2020.
