Australian Consumer Law (ACL) dictates that businesses operating in Australia must ensure the consumer products that they sell meet mandatory safety standards, are fit for their intended purpose and safe. One way of determining this is for products to be tested to show they meet the necessary standards. If a product fails any of these tests, it must be removed from sale immediately.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has recently released ‘Product Safety – A Guide to Testing‘ which helps businesses:
- identify products which are covered by mandatory safety standards and bans
- identify products requiring compliance testing
- implement effective risk management and quality assurance measures to minimise the risk of making, buying or selling unsafe products.
