Single use plastic bottles in a pile

The National Retail Association (NRA) has today declared that it is ready to consult with the Queensland Government on proposed reforms to single-use plastic laws.

Earlier today Queensland Environment Minister Leanne Enoch announced that the Government would look to introduce legislation to scrap items such as plastic straws, cutlery and plates.

NRA CEO Dominique Lamb said that with consumers increasingly moving away from plastic, any ban would have minimal impact on retailers so long as there was strong industry consultation and support.

“Many retailers have already started to move away from single-use plastic items such as straws and lids. Along with environmental considerations, this has also been driven by consumer attitudes towards plastic changing,” Ms Lamb said.

“Increasing numbers of shoppers are becoming more environmentally conscious and have been seeking out alternatives to plastic.

“But before any legislation is passed there needs to be extensive industry consultation to ensure a smooth transition. Retailers need to be given time to clear out existing stock and find alternatives to offer consumers, while Queenslanders need to be informed on any changes that impact the way they shop.”

Ms Lamb also pointed to the strong cooperation between the NRA and the Queensland Government over the 2018 plastic bag ban as evidence of what can be achieved when legislators and industry work together.

“The NRA has a proven track record of working with governments to successfully implement changes that affect the retail industry,” Ms Lamb said

“Banning lightweight plastic shopping bags was one of the biggest reforms the sector has seen in recent times and we welcomed the opportunity to work with the Queensland Government to assist businesses and the public navigate that change.”

The National Retail Association is Australia’s most representative retail industry association.  It has been serving businesses in the retail and fast food sectors for close to 100 years.
