The Hon Rob Lucas MLC, Treasurer, has today declared an exemption for the Australia Day public holiday – Wednesday, 26 January 2022, that will enable non-exempt shops in the Metropolitan Shopping District and Glenelg Tourist Precinct (the Adelaide suburban area) to trade between the hours of 11.00 am and 5.00 pm on that day.
The National Retail Association notes that the Shop Trading Hours Act 1977 (SA) already permits trading from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm in the Adelaide CBD on most public holidays which includes the Australia Day public holiday.
The exemption will allow greater freedom of choice but stores should not feel compelled to trade these additional hours. For those who choose to do so, all employees working during these extended hours will do so on a strictly voluntary basis.
